"Everyone who loves music has that moment. That instant in time when you hear a song that got you. Really got you down to your soul. You save your money for the CD. Then, bringing home your precious CD, you unwrap the pesky cellophane (I always use my teeth) and pop the CD into your walkman or stereo.

Something happened.

Music, before that moment,was music. It was there to sing along with, hum along with, dance to, move to. It was a soundtrack for your life. But this was different. This one song, whatever it was, transformed you. The song took you some place primal, some place where you'd never be the same.

I realized that the truth was a lot like rock and roll: It meand different things to different people, just like when I heard "my" song, I left my body briefly, and for other people, it ws just another dumb song.

I thought of how I felt when I heard certain songs. Like I had flopped straight back on my bed, like I was falling, like I was floating, like I was lost in a moment. Certain songs made me want to listen to them over and over and over again. I felt that way when I heard "Candy's Room" by Bruce Springsteen, or "Black Hole Sun." I could get lost in Annie Lennox's voice. And there were moments, in the pit of my stomace, when I really gave myself over to a song. When I had headphones one and shut my eyes, and stopped being me and became song, word, notes. It was a leap of faith, music. You had to let go of the world if you ever really wanted to get lost in it...You have to go to the edge of the rock-and-roll abyss and jump in with both feet. You just have to take a leap of faith. You just have to rock on."
